Location Intelligence

  • Location intelligence (LI) is a business intelligence (BI) tool capability that relates geographic contexts to business.
  • The term “location intelligence” is a relatively new term in this digital era that began some 30 or more years ago.
  • It was introduced to to describe how location analysis could be applied primarily to common business problems such as site selection or customer profiling.
  • Location intelligence can use a variety of spatial and business analytical tools to measure optimal locations for operating a business or providing a service.

How is it Different From Business Intelligence ?

Business Intelligence System That;

  • Enable efficient multi channel access and analysis of enterprise information
  • Provide a platform for timely decision making
  • All user driven self Service
  • Typically BI Systems provide the “Who”, “What” and “When”.
  • Spatial BI, The Integration of BI & GIS , adding the “where” factor to analyses which;
  • Enhance the “who” dimension by tying third party data (such as market potential ) to internal enterprise data.
  • Enable analytics based on the “where” factor with intuitive map-based visualization that might reveal spatial relationship, dependencies or trends difficult to otherwise identify

  • Reveals Spatial relationship, trends clusters and patterns undetectable with traditional BI
  • Detect link patterns and trends depending on spatial context

Location Intelligence Use Cases

  • Descriptive- DLI find some new insight based on spatial relationships in the data such as adjacency or proximity to drill into more spatial detail or zoom out to see a broader pattern.
  • Predictive- PLI helps with correlation analysis, trend analysis, and forecasting to create a simplified, manageable view of the world to help solve problems or broaden understanding of how  location impacts a decision.
  • Prescriptive- Knowing the lay of the land (DLI) and what may happen there (PLI) paves the way for prescriptive location intelligence, in which decisions are assisted or prescribed by spatial relationships or models.
