GIS Technology to Aid in National Mission of Clean Ganga


The river Ganga has been the prime source of water in Northern plains in India. Since time immemorial Ganga has been the home of some major ancient cities in India (E.g. Varanasi and Patna). As the population along the river grew in size, consumption of fresh water for various activities such as drinking, cleaning, washing, industrial, agricultural, etc. increased. This lead to stress on water resources all over Ganges watershed with ground water going down year after year. Post liberalization economic boom has also compounded the problem of population explosion which has exaggerated the problem of water resources. There is an urgent need to analyze and monitor current quality parameters of river Ganga so that corrective measures can be taken for the problems.

GIS in Disaster Management

Keeping the current and future scenario in mind, Government of India has launched various programs for effective abatement of pollution and rejuvenation of river Ganga. As all the resources on earth are connected with spatial information, GIS will play a big role in coming years in effective management of water resources. A push has already started in this direction with the launch of National Mission for Clean Ganga.

Uses of GIS - River Management

• Land Resource Management

  • GIS enables officials of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to keep a track of activities happening over the area under their jurisdiction hence preventing polluting industry to grow unchecked in the region near a water source.

• Water Waste Management

  • GIS can help ULBs in managing their waste water by streamlining the process of identifying the source of pollution in an area. The wasted water by means of any industrial process can be routed to a drain leading to recycling plants which can be managed through GIS. Using GIS for these processes has an added advantage of spatial report generation wherein capacity of the plant and the pollution generating industries can be balanced out for optimal use of the resource.

• Solid Waste Management

  • Solid waste in river Ganga increases due to industrial, cultural and social causes. GIS can help in planning ways in which these can be cleaned out in timely and cost effective manner with specific collection points planned along the course of the river. Route planning to nearest recycling plants helps save both time and energy in the process.

• River Front Management

  • Developing a river front leads to decrease in pollution of river due to non-point source of pollution and beautification of the river. GIS can help authorities in effective planning of river front such that its development does not affect the biodiversity and ecology of the local flora and fauna.

• Hydrological Modelling

  • GIS can be integrated with a Hydrological model to assess the minimum amount of flow required to sustain the ecology of watershed while allowing the associated industry to run profitably. These models can also be used for predictive planning to delineate the amount of water that would be available throughout the year hence leading to effective river management.

• Pollution Monitoring

  • Irrigation network operated in the river watershed can be monitored for leakages and problem area can be resolved by using remote sensing techniques. This leads to quick turnaround time and cost effective solution for problems. The demand for water in agriculture can be met keeping the limited water resource available in mind using GIS. Water level in reservoirs can be monitored with sensors and field water requirement can be met using rotation policy by using decision support tools in GIS.
